Plan to Pre-Plan…

November 11, 2010

Although in my previous blog, I felt the need to share precisely about keeping abreast of the communication train, and my lack of finding time to log into everything and update my status. The very idea of a blog and just some of my connections following it, would possibly solve a problem for me and save me from having to update everywhere else, as my network would know through this blog exactly what I was up to, Via my blog!

Okay I am beginning to get it  (we’ll not really, but I will try)

My present career as a Preplanning Advisor in the Death Care Industry helping individuals and their families to think ahead, and organize their wishes, as well as prearrange for Cemetery Cremation and Funeral arrangements, brings me so many rewards and satisfaction.

I personally believe this is a gift that we give to our families, a final lasting gift to have our affairs organized and in order for family to take over for us, in the event of our death or should an unexpected death occur.

I was given such a gift myself in 1999, and it was because of this Gift, I chose this career to help others benefit from this selfless act of love.

Although not a “sexy” subject per se’, it is a subject that one day we all have to come to terms with. Why not now.

Unfortunately, we will not live forever and what do I want to have happen to my body should I die?…needs to be addressed…eventually. Better sooner than later.

Why not talk with me?

I have a excellent tool, it is a Life Estate planner that I give out  free, with no obligation what so ever,  to help you get your affairs in order and for you to leave in a safe place for loved ones, family or friends to gather when they should need it.

Of course you will tell them where you keep your document, so they can easily find it.I have heard so may comments from people and some that are very humorous, such as “Oh no, I don’t want to pre plan…I am giving my body to science”!  What makes people think Science wants your body? Are you kidding me?

There is a procedure in place, to apply to… to even see if the Universities would even qualify and take your body? Yes you have to qualify to some degree.

Those that have made these comments, have you done that? Checked in with the University you are donating to or would like to donate to?

Often very sad statements like ”I don’t want to pre plan, they can just burn me and throw my cremated remains where they want”, “Nobody even visits me anymore. Nobody cares anymore about me.’ My family hardly ever finds the time to visit me…they are always soooo busy…. Never mind help even with my funeral”

These people I just want to hug and say I will take care of you. But I couldn’t possibly do that, unfortunately there are just too many seniors in this position.

When was the last time you visited your lonely senior parent, uncle or aunt? Just to pop in for a tea.

It is uncomfortable and thought provoking for some of us isn’t it? We just assume they’re o.k. Cause we haven’t heard from them, and it saves us from saying were to busy right now to have a visit.  I deal with a lot of healthy happy people, but I also have clients who are very ill and are making arrangements to save their children and families with dealing with this piece too, .at a time when they are experiencing a profound loss.

How do I even begin to think what you may want? I just want to call the number you were given for me to call…. And all else will be in place, and I can begin to process my healing and feel the grief of your loss in my life.

Hopefully as I blog along here… I can share some wisdom, knowledge and experiences with you that you will find interesting and informative.

How to Blog: Still Learning!

October 21, 2010

My name is Deborah Van Pelt; I am a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

I am a Pre Planning Advisor for ten years, an author, a writer, and I had a former 25-year career as a Bell Canada employee. My areas of expertise are in loving what I do, and helping others in many areas of my life.

Today though, I am blogging as I am told it is imperative to networking and getting your story out there. It seems everyone has a blog now or do they really? Do I just feel that way?

I feel I am not working effectively if I don’t have a blog or is this just my perception or my inner Cemetery lady saying,  “I’m not on top of current trends, if I don’t have a blog”?

My biggest problem and I am not sure if it’s the same for you…but it’s finding time, yes finding those quiet moments to collect my thoughts, and share something that’s worthwhile that just might mean something to someone out there in cyber world…tick, tock, tick tock!

I wish I knew how all of my colleagues and friends find this valuable commodity of time to blog, twitter, facebook, email, voicemail, text and still network on Linkedin. They  manage to be productive and produce results and revenue in their businesses, not to mention be involved in living life itself and spending time with family and friends.

I really admire those of you who can commit to consistently updating your status and keeping those of us in your network world up to date and abreast on your every move. Is this really necessary I ask? That we need to  know some of these personal  entries. Is it not so much easier to call one another up and meet up for coffee or lunch? To catch up, and really network and build a relationship.

I am still learning about this thing called Life Balance. What the hell is that? Hmmm

Have you mastered this? Or are you feeling much like me?
